I don't see why they can't be but I do have the opinion that in almost all cases there is some sexual attraction on one site of the relationship.

Difficult to answer this one - my husband and I were really good friends for 8 years before we decided to try our friendship as a relationship - fortunately it worked and we're still together 20 years on. Having said that I have some really good friends who are men, they are friends of my husbands but friends of mine in their own right and I'm pretty certain there is no sexual attraction!!!
