there is a free version of avg you can download from the website (difficult to find as not obviously placed). i have used this for ages and found it great and it was recommended by a computer boffin i know. the versions of avg you pay for do offer more stuff, but i have never encountered any problems with the freebie. i hope you work out which coverage is gonna work for you - good luck!

I just upgraded my freebie to the new Version 8 freebie, took me a few times to download it but it seems ok so far.

weeal - do you have any problems with your e-mail scanner having to be activated a lot, or do my settings need tweaking? i have looked, but can't seem to work out why it switches itself off randomly. any help v. appreciated - did try on tech pages, but just got ignored!

Get AVG 8 if you want it, but don't stick with 7.5. AVG are no longer supporting that version. That means it won't be updated to catch any new viruses. I run AVG 8 and it's great to use, even the regular updates are less intrusive.

stonekicker, I dont download my emails so I havent come across that, I always read my mail online

twice Ive lost a hard drive and everything on it, so Outlook etc is a thing of the past for me

I upgraded to the free version last night, but it doesn't show up in the bottom taskbar or whatever you call it. I set it to scan once a day at a certain time - so wonder how/when/if it'll tell me if it finds anything???

hi Icey, I set mine to scan at 11pm and it just sent a wee popup thingy (fancy nancy) to say the scan had started but Its not gone slow or anything so not sure what it's done lol

I have an icon in the tray. Open avg and click on history for scan results, virus vault etc.

I didn't like the latest version of avg after updating to version 8 (free). Too many pop ups in that version, and it made google look a mess. I have now moved to avast, that i find better.

I downloaded the new AVG8 free edition about a fortnight ago and fingers crossed so far it's worked perfect. You can get it from download.com or if that doesn't work just type free AVG 8 in search engine and you'll find it.
