I have been told that it is better to water the garden. baskets etc in the morning rather than in the evening.
Is this in fact so? And if so, why?

I thought the opposite was true. I always water at night when its cool and the sun is going down as then the water soaks in rather than evaporating.

Also the water can encourage the roots to come to the surface and then they would burn. Same with getting the leaves wet in the full sun.

Thats what my dad told me anyway!!

I water mine morning (6am) and evening - but never in bright sunlight.
just water when you can, you cant choose when it rains and nature seems to have managed perfectly well for a few years now.

There are many pros and cons to the time you water if you care to get technical about it but the most important thing is making sure the plants get some when they need it.
One of the reasons why watering early morning is recommended is because the soil has cooled down. If we water in the evening on soil which is very warm, the water evaporates.
