My young niece is wanting and IPOD Nano for her birthday. My sister would like to get her this and was going to take her to an apple shop to choose. There is about a 30 difference between a 4GB and an 8GB and she knows the shop will probably encourage her to buy the 8GB. We are not very good with these things but wondered - is the 4GB worth buying. Her normal birthday limit is 100 so would rather buy the 4GB but not if my niece is not going to be able to put much on it. thanks

a 4GB nano will hold up to 1000 songs.

Personally speaking, it is more than adequate for me - I have two ipods - one for the car (2GB) and one for the gym (4GB).

On my gym one, I keep audio books and music suitable for working out to. On the other I keep 'calmer' music.

If she is not going near a computer for a while (eg she is travelling) then a higher one may be better.
I would go for the 8Gb. The Nano will play music videos and films as well as music, and that takes up more space. She can also put her photographs onto it, and games. The more Gigabites give you more versatility.

thank you both for your prompt answers. that is great about photos I did not know that. Oneeyedvic - you mention 1000 songs - would it be much less if downloading the videos?
If you look here: http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstor e.woa/wa/RSLID?sf=w2YF4JXY4AHCAJCDF&nclm=FD514 2C7

You can get a refurbed 8GB direct from Apple for 95.00

These are normally perfect and have had their cases changed for new ones and they come with a 12 month warranty.

fabulous thanks - i will get onto that.
I would go for the larger size, you'd be surprised how soon it will fill up. Mine holds about 2,000 songs but, to be honest, I would like it to hold more. It sounds like a lot of tracks but if you use it often and want variety it's not really.
