Why would my Springer Spaniel howl. He is 9 years old very active and not penned in. He leads a very active life. and has only recently begun howling for no reason that we can figure out.
Haven't got an answer unfortunately but my springer does exactly the same! We have 3 dogs (2 terriers and the springer) so they sometimes set each other off (!!) but our springer is usually ok unless he's trying to tell us something. but occasionally when they do, he will howl like an old air-raid siren!! It's so similar it's halairious (excuse the spelling) but not when it's at 3am!
Thankfully, it's once in a blue moon so not that bad
occassionally dogs howling can be triggered by certain pitches of noise. It could be that he can hear something that triggers this howling response that you cannot hear. Whats new in your area and is there anything new on your property that might make certain sounds that could trigger this. unfortunately, if the noise is in someone elses property and you can't hear it your stumped!
Hi drdrmrgn, hope you and your Springer are OK. Might it be that he is going a little deaf? I have heard about some older dogs (although 9 isn't really old for a Spaniel!) who howl a bit as they lose their hearing. Just something to think about...
Wioth out more info it's hard to say but you should look at why the wolf might do this. They use it as communicatuon. It's the only way to to call across many miles of land to other pack members. I would look it up and get some idea of the natrual dog and not the one that lives in your house. I have 3 dogs and as much as they are my family (like my kids) they are still dogs living in a pack.
