Editing

Can anyone tell me about being an editor? like at a publishing company or free lance. I'm thinking of majoring in English and was wondering if I might apply my skills toward a job as an editor but don't know much about the technicalities of the job. Thanks for any help you can give me!!!  I'm in US but interested in how it works in UK or other countries as well.

Don't know about in the US but here (UK) you can do qualifications in Publishing.  I was looking at a post-grad diploma in publishing a while back as I have a degree in English.  It covered all aspects of publishing with the option of focusing on 1 part in paticular (ie editing).  There was also the opportunity to do work experience with some major companies.

Decided against it in the end as publishing seems quite badly paid for an awful lot of stress.  May be better in the US though!
