my antivirus picked up trojan
"TR/AutoR.NMY.7470.1" and deleted it but when trying to open my hard drives from "my computer" I get
"resycled\boot.com is not a valid Win32 application" although I can access the hard drives via Windows Explorer
I then scanned with Trendmicro and it found 2 infections which are a result of this trojan
C:\autorun.inf
E:\autorun.inf
but is unable to remove them automatically, they should be removed manually according to this

but it all seems a bit risky, is there a simple way round this problem?

I'd be inclined to follow the instructions that you have found, as it seems that the registry is also likely to be affected. Presumable the E: drive is a memory stick, or similar, so it could be possible to reformat this, after saving any files that you need to keep.
