Before you even get the fish out of the fridge, put about a tablespoonful of ordinary vinegar in a saucer on a work-top. It soon neutralises the smell.

Incent sticks. Be careful not to get ones too powerful. I can recommend sandalwood or cinnamon scented. I bought some from Poundland and they had fruit scented ones which were also quite nice.
just dont cook it i hate fish seriously just open all your windows

Thank you all for your replies. Tried the open window as well as the door but the smell still lingered.
Well, we've been having kippers - among the strongest-smelling of fish - for Friday breakfast weekly for decades and I can assure you that the vinegar-treatment works every time here...no need to freeze the house by opening doors and windows on these cold and frosty days!

Thank you Quizmonster it worked.
Wonderful! A chemist once explained to me how it works, but - being utterly unscientific - I never really understood and now I can't even remember what he said!
