As a life-long Liverpool fan, Octavius, I go for the analysis of Alyson Rudd, one of the Times sports reporters who reckons that the whole thing was a conspiracy and that no goal was scored at all. The ITV staff, all known as Everton fans, had prepared in advance a 'goal replay' sequence from old archive footage. Knowing that if it went to penalties Liverpool would win, they took the match off the air for few seconds then brought it back with this phoney replay of a non-goal.
They had had to bribe all the commentators, reporters and analysts, of course, but they're rich enough.
Alas, tempting as it is, I can't bring myself to believe it and must accept that Liverpool are now out of both domestic cups and we'll have only the Premiership and European Cup to console us.
Well done Everton, though. They deserved it. Have a drink on me, 123everton.
