Dogs rolling in fox S@*T

My four year old springer spaniel bitch, daily rolls in fox C??P. Can anybody shed any light on this?

I have been told that dogs do it when in heat, to mask the smell, but that was only a theory.

I have had several springers over the years and none of them have ever done this.

My labrador delights in dropping her shoulder and rolling in fox poo shoulder first ....and doesn't it stink !!! I've learned to watch for the shoulder dropping first now and can avert it most of the time . x

We live on the coast and ALL our Labradors, when presented with a dead fish washed up, or worse, a dead seal have ecstatically rolled on it.

It's a dog thing. Just keep the hosepipe ready upon return.

Both my dog and my bitch springers do it, so that knocks the "heat" theory out of the water! the previous three springers also all did it.

My labby and bearded collie do it.............do not know why..............stinks eh?

And when you hose them down they look at you as if to say "But I smell lovely!?!" and then "Fine, I'll just go do it again tomorrow!"

My Staffie bitch does it but she's been spayed since 6 months. My male never does it.
But like someone else said, I look for the sideway head turn and shoulder drop just before she's about to do it

If you can't get rid of the smell try rubbing tomato ketchup on to the part that smells and then rinsing.

all our dogs have loved to do this...Our first ever dog was about six months old when we moved house. We were in the new house before we bought it measuring for curtains (it was sold vacant) Darling pup was running round the garden on a lovely quiet sunday. He came tearing into the house absolutely plastered with it. no water on in the house and we had a two hour drive home!! 20 years ago so no sunday shopping then apart from small local shops. We descended on the local one and bought up all the tomato juice, ketchup and kitchen roll that they had and did our best sooooo stinky.

There are two theories of why dogs roll in fox or any other poo.
This behaviour goes back to their ancestors and you won`t change it in the lifetime of your pet, it`s said it is a means to make them smell like their quarry so it would be easier to get closer before being spotted. If your dog smelt of perfume it`s quarry would smell it much quicker.
The second theory is it is taking an interesting scent back to the pack i.e. you.
Whichever is correct you won`t change this behavioual pattern that has evolved over thousands of years.

springers are origionaly hunting dogs.
they are roling in the fox $h17 to discuise their smell to anything like rabbits or hares for instance that could smell them and run of.
lots of hunting dogs do this.

I thought any dog does this given half a chance - it's one of the joys of dog ownership!!!
