Are the government about to break their manifesto pledge not to increase fees for students? If we're going to move to American style charging system then surely we should give parents enough time to save for their child's education rather than a step increase that will push them further into debt?

The funny thing is though that if you go on the dole and apply to do a part time open university course or even a number of college courses you will get greatly reduced and even free fees.

cupra what exactly do you mean. are you referring to the UCL Imperial Union plan ( and the 10,000 a year fees they want to charge) or do you mean the satndard 1000(ish) pounds means tested fee - which has increased before anyway.

The UCL plan is obviously the most extreme proposed fee rise, but it seems that most Universities are looking for more funding.

The 'word on the street' is that the capped amount will rise from �1100, perhaps beginning a year on year rise. Of course, the means tested subsidy will still remain, but any substantial rise will affect a large number of 'bordeline support' families.

Why does it surprise you that Blair & his cronies are going back on a promise? They have proved themselves to be very competent liars over the past few years! Integrity? They don't know the meaning of the word.
