Apple Mac Question?
8 Answers
I'm about to purchase a MacBook, I currently have an Emac which is connected to the internet.
What is involved to get the MacBook connected to the internet I want it wireless. I know nothing about computers and want them both online, but clueless as to what is involved..
Can anyone give me some advice as to what my next steps are?
Thanks in advance..

but HC is correct, you need a wireless router, either with a built in modem (if ADSL) or one suitable for use with a cable modem (if cable)
these are available to buy for a fairly mosest price, or it may be worth you contacting your ISP and seeing if you can get a free one from them.

Tesco provides ADSL internet (i.e., through your phone line).
So, you want something like this:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/52244
(I can recommend that site, as well as Netgear as a brand. Linksys are also good.)
You currently probably just have a modem from Tesco, which goes between your phone line and eMac. This box linked above just replaces your old modem box.
If you want your eMac wireless too (I'm assuming your eMac is close enough to the phone line that you can just connect it with a cable to the modem/router linked above), then you need to buy a USB wifi dongle, setting you back about a tenner (ebuyer also stocks them too).
But wired connections are always better than wireless, so since it's a desktop machine, stick to wired if you can help it.

It sounds like you already have broadband and a Mac that is connected to a router by cable (probably by ethernet).
You need to buy Airport extreme. You plug your router into this and set up Airport on your new computer.

Yes, then you need one of these cards:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-M8881-Airport-Ex treme-Card/dp/B0000AT9MB
I've never done it myself, but apparently it just involves removing a plastic slot in the front of the eMac's case, and slotting the card in.
Instructions are in the eMac's user manual, which can be found online at Apple Support if you don't have it yourself.
