Mouse Pads

I don`t use these as they tend to make the side of my hand sore with the constant use, so I just use a smooth piece of card which is a little better. What I am needing to know is, are mouse pads necessary as I don`t notice any benefit from them?

if you have an optical mouse (no ball underneath, just a light) then you can use it on whatever you feel comfortable on, they don't work well on shiny stuff but other than that no worries.

if it's an old style mouse with a ball then they do tend to work best on a decent mouse mat.
You could always get yourself a mousepad that has a wrist rest carlton,I have always used one and wouldn't be without it now.
