Help !! Some years ago I read a book (novel) about a shooting competition in cowboy times, in which they shot at glass balls thrown into the air. If anybody has any idea, I would be very grateful. I know it's a long shot (no pun intended) but if you don't ask ........................

It sounds as if the glass balls referred to are Victorian-style shooting targets - glass balls were stuffed with feathers, flicked into the air by a spring-operated thingy and shot at by toffs. I suppose clay discs were found to be cheaper so we have 'clay pigeons' now, but in France the glass balls survive in the language - painful-sounding 'le ball-trap' means clay pigeon shooting.
