Is it me who's too foxy.?!!!

Yesterday I saw a fox which was limping as it passed through my garden. Then this morning at about 7.30am I looked out of the bedroom window and saw the very same fox lying prostrate on my lawn and alongside the garden pond. Consequently, I immediately telephoned the RSPCA 24hr helpline and,as the animal was still alive, arrangements were made for 'an officer' to call upon me as soon as possible. In the meanwhile I was requested to monitor the poor creature and report back if it left my garden.

At about 1.30pm. today, I witnessed the beautifully coated creature was breathing very heavily and, after a number of bodily tremors, soon afterwards died..Consequently, I again telephoned the RSPCA and was informed that, as the fox was dead, I should 'double bin it' in plastic bags and place out for collection as normal domestic refuse. I was aghast at such advice and immediately contacted my local Authority (Swansea City Council) and the young lady to whom I spoke was, in my opinion, as appalled as I was at the advice which had been given by the RSPCA.

Consequently, my local Authority's representative arranged for the dead fox to be collected (which it was within two hours) and she in formed me that the service would be free of any charge.

It's shocking! I saw a cat being hit by a car a few years ago, it ran into a field, I stopped my car and followed and found the poor thing, it was still alive, so I rang the local RSPCA, they told me that they would be with me within half an hour, two hours later, I was still waiting on the roadside! The cat died soon after! nobody arrived! I managed to track down the owner of the cat, and break the bad news.....still no one from the RSPCA.............I rang and told them............'no point in showing up now, too late by far', They just said 'Ok thanks for letting us know' I was disgusted by this!............before this happened I really thought they could be relied upon to care for animals in trouble!.....................maybe it was just that branch...........but didn't fill me with confidence in the service!.......................

Thanks mrs.chappie and welshlibranr for having responded. It does seem that the RSPCA is not as we may imagine it to be. When I spoke today to the organisation there was a concern that I was prepared to receive mailings for it's future fund raising events. I did agree to; but feel that I shall now be binning them when they arrive.

Viv & Ron - We didn't get any help [from them] when a neighbour had gone away for a fortnight, leaving her dog in the garden with just the shed for shelter. As she'd left it food and some bedding, in their eyes it was OK!

Even when the poor thing had dragged it's bedding into the garden, which then got soaked, they still wouldn't do a thing. Not the impression you get when Rolf and the TV crew were around! Unbeleivable.

Perhaps next time ask your local vet for the wildlife rescue centre in your area, if you're unfortunate to have this happen again. Sorry that sounds terribly pompous, wasn't mean to be. Take care

agree Ron and all
the USPCA(here in N Ireland) are similar--push you onto someone else-their 'head' adores publicity and tv coverage
plus point-due to the uspca's attitude(and that of their 'head') independent animal shelters have been established

How awful, poor fox! I cannot believe the advice you were given. I know they are busy and struggle but hat fox may not have died if it had the right attention. At least you cared enough to ring them to try and get him seen too. I am disgusted by the RSPCA's treatment of this case! - I would make a complaint. I wonder why he died?

I cannot believe that there isn't a service to help injured animals?! Clearly the RSPCA isn't up to the job, whether it is down to lack of funding or not I am unsure but it is disgusting that so many animals have been injured or died due to a failure to turn up!

I just recently read that 18 of the RSPCAs shelters are no longer taking in ANY strays. Anyone who shows up will be turned away,as they are now going to focus on animal welfare.........catching the 'baddies' who mis treat their animals. But this will just serve to create MORE baddies as people dump their unwanted pets. The streets will be full of mal-nourished and feral former house pets. Makes you wonder what the hell they do with all the money contributed??

Strange, not a single word from an ABer in support of the RSPCA. Perhaps they think we are talking about the Royal Society Perpetuating Constant Annoyance.

Incidentally, kia cat, there was nothing which sounded pompous and it was interesting to hear from beejay that a general disgust of the USPCA has resulted in folk putting their money into independent animal shelters.

Greedyfly.....I have been led to believe that the fox may have been struck by a car. It was apparent that the poor animal had received a blow to it's side which accounted for a swollen and possible broken back leg and,although it coat suggested an animal in good health, there were possibly internal injuries sustained.

Good point which you have made. Furthermore, not only will we see people dumping unwanted pets into streets and open country but slaughtering them and putting them into black plastic bags for collection as domestic refuse.

I've no time for the RSPCA at all, they are a total waste of time, all they are interested in is raking donations in and then avoid spending any at all costs, how can they leave the poor creature dying for so long.

This post has totally infuriated me - I am so angry at the RSPCA and its seemingly lack of care. Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - maybe thats the answer? They will only PREVENT cruelty. I bet if you had euthanized the animal and someone had seen it you would have been charged. Who are we supposed to call when we find a sick or injured animal?

The RSPCA inspector was quick in that link as she thought "the hanging of the dog over the bridge was intentional"! You don't say!
