Internet access problem on laptop

Hi everybody,

I have a laptop which has Windows 2000 on it. I have put my Virgin Media Ethernet lead into it (I have also bought a brand new one as well). All I get is a screen saying "cannot find server". I have taken it into a computer shop and it WILL work in the shop. Virgin Media are saying there is nothing more they can do as it doesn't sound like it has an internet card in the laptop but it has because it was running in the shop. Could it be a problem with Windows 2000.

Many thanks to all who take the time in reading the above and maybe even replying.

Is it connected directly to the Virgin modem, or via a router?
Is it cable broadband or phone broadband?

Hi, directly to the Virgin modem and it is the broadband which operates my phone and TV called Virgin Media (I'm not very technical - sorry)
All I can think of is you have a dodgy ethernet cable. Is it connected firmly both ends with no obvious sign of damage?
Consider changing the cable.
