That's the trouble, doc.
HMRC assessed, got it wrong and collected too little/much.
All the paperwork ought to correspond..........

something to do with the 'new' computer system doc. you may have got it right but they didn't
It mainly affects people who changed jobs or whose circumstances changed meaning that they ought to have been placed in a different code........
The were taxed according to a previous or incorrect code, so everything would have matched; wage slips and P60.
I think it is more likely to be wrong if you have changed enployers during the last few years, particularly where you have changed frequently and maybe had the odd gap etc. Those woho have a standard tax code and have remained with the same employer are likely to be okay as far as I can make out.

arhhh but will HR Customs give you a apyment for doing it wrong..Nope?
you would recieve £100 fine then interest added if you were late with your tax returns
Question Author
sorry that should have been
HM Customs
Why don't I get a letter any more telling me what my tax code is?

How can I check, if they don't tell me my code? They must be telling my employers.
its on your payslip hopkirk, or it should be!
Question Author
I thought everyone knew their code Hopkirk, didn't you get your P60 this year?
Your tax-code is given to you by HMRC...............it gets a bit circular...........
Oh I know it's on my payslip and P60, but I used to get a letter when it changed.

Now I have no idea how they get to that code.
Question Author
there is a site you can go to which breaks it down, maybe jack knows it?
Fill your boots..............:o)

I knew she would, she's geet clever..lol
What with? That doesn't explain it.
As your employers deduct the tax from your earnings, HMRC (by use of tax code, etc) tell them how much they expect to receive each week from *you*, Hopkirk.
Every year as allowances alter, so does the tax code..........
Yes, and every year I used to get a letter from the Revenue telling me what my tax code was - and I don't any more.
