You can then get the train back from Hampton Court Station. If you use a one day travel card you get a discount for the boat trip. Only runs until October but a really good day out and value for money. They have drinks on the boat too.
You could also get a boat at Westminster (by the London Eye, City Cruises, or on the other side of the bridge). Get a return to Greenwich. It takes about an hour, sit outside for the best view if its not too cold (wrap up warm, its worth it). You will get a running commentary by the boat's skipper, and they are usually very funny. Very interesting, I do this every few months. You can stop at the Tower of London, either on the way there or on the way back. Greenwich Market has a good Craft Market on certain days of the week, google it to find out the best day to go. Also very maritime if that interests you. You can get a drink on these boats, not a 'meal' though. Best to go early, you will be able to do more. Enjoy !
The trip from Westminster Pier to Tower Pier (via the London Eye Millennium Pier) takes just 40 minutes but takes in many of the main tourist attractions. If you want to see more, the boat continues on to Greenwich, taking a total of 1 hour 10 minutes. See page 26 here:

Westminster to Kew takes about three hours if I remember rightly. Try this :- take the DLR to Island Gardens come out of the station and cross the road there is a park and you can see Greenwich on the other side, take the lift down in the park [ no stair climbing] and walk under the Thames to Greenwich takes about 8mins to walk, use lift to come back up into Greenwich, walk to the Greenwich Observatory, lovely views from up there + museum, come down and take the boat to the Tower of London and disembark, walk through to St Katherine's Dock next to the Tower for lunch in the Charles Dickens pub then do the Tower. or take a look inside Tower Bridge.
Unless you have all day the boat trip to Kew or Richmond is very time consuming and I doubt you would find time to do the return journey all in one day.If doing the longer journey take you own drinks and packed lunch.
or stay on the boat and get off at Charing Cross.
