As you may have read in my previous post, i have adopted a 1 year old border terrier. He was always jumping up and thanks to the advice on here has now calmed down.
I now have another problem. He is chewing anything and everything. I forgot how hard it is to take a puppy on lol.
I just wondered if anyone could give me some advice on how to stop it. It's been a long time since i had a puppy in the house and would be grateful for any advice anyone could give.
i have found if you dont leave him on his own sometimes chewing is a sign of boredom in dogs,a quick squirt with water when you catch him chewing and he will soon realise its the wrong thing to do,good luck.
Do you mean chairs and tables or stuff left around?
Rule one is don't leave stuff around!!
Has he finished teething?
Is he bored?
When does he chew? If its when he is left alone, is it separation anxiety?
Has he got things he is allowed to chew?
Try filled bones from pet shops, these are robust enough and filled with a tasty filling to keep a dog amused for hours, I found these helped so much whenever my hound was left for a few hours, or a good knotted raw hide chew.... get your dog into the habit of receiving a new tasty chew bone each time you leave him alone, he will get the message that when you leave something nice happens too....good luck, he will grow out of it, patience and perseverance though all the way...
If he is a year old he should have finished teething. Give him lots of things he can chew, bones, pigs ears, even the cardboard middle of toilet rolls and kitchen rolls, plastic milk bottles (minus the top of course). Old socks knotted, just make sure you don't leave good ones lying around. If he chews when you are there, take whatever it is off him and offer him something of his to chew. When you leave him confine him to an area he cannot chew - a puppy pen or crate works wonders.
yeah we got two puppies who chewed everything. During the night and wenever we go out we put them in a crate. They don't mind it and we usually leave something for them to chew on like the bones with stuff in. It's much safer than leaving them free to roam coz they could eat something that mite harm them while ur gone.
