Desktop icons

I have just purcased a reconditioned laptop (an Acer Aspire) running Win XP, I am trying to load some of the programs that I lost when my old lappy bit the dust, when I
place the desktop icons where I want them by holding down the left click button they move to where I place them but as soon as I release the button they fly back to where the computer wants to put them, how can I stop this happening?

Right click on your desktop and tick align to grid.

Now here's the correct answer:
Right-click the desktop, choose "arrange icons by", and uncheck autoarrange.
