How old do you have to be to smoke?

I know you have to be 18 years old to buy tobbaco or ciggis but how old do you acctually have to be to smoke? might be a stupid question but i smoke and i am 16, but have never been told by the police to put a fag out or had them taken off me?

I left school at 15 and started work straight away, I had smoked the odd cigarette at the youth club so when I started work in an office, where they all smoked (ages ago) I used to buy 5 Woodbines, 9d in old money, just so I didn't feel left out. Times have changed I see school children on the street at lunch time smoking. I'd love to tell them to stop doing it.
