If it's vista then control panel > audio devices and set HDMI audio to the default device.
if it's windows 7 just right click on the speaker icon down by the clock and select playback devices and again set the HDMI audio to the default device.
You'll need might need to swap back again when you disconnect the hdmi cable to get your sound back from your normal speakers.

Firstly try running the program from the link below, it's an automated fix it from microsoft that basically resets your audio devices.
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9668690
if that doesn't work then check in the device manager under sound video and game controllers and what do you have listed there?

right i have run the programme from the link you posted. and then gone into the device manager and then looked at the sound video and game controllers and there is two things listed there. Conexant high definition smart audio 221 and NVIDIA HDMI audio. its says both devices are working properly, i then tried 'driver update' but still no luck. now the volume control in the bottom right corner of the screen has gone and when i go into properties notification area, it has been 'ghosted' out and i cannot select it. :-((((
