Gas hob ignition

I have a little white button which I press to ignite the gas on my gas hob. I cleaned the top today and now I get the clicking sound as if the ignition button has been pressed. It is doing it on it`s own at regular intervals. I`ve tried turning off the electricity to the cooker and it still did it. I`ve pulled at all the buttons and nothing is depressed. Why would it be doing this? If I got water into the button when I cleaned the hob, could that be causing it?

Yes water in the ignition button will cause this, if it hasn't stopped by now try using a hairdrier on it.

Thanks Fitzer. I haven`t heard it click today so as you say, it was obviously the water. I`ll be more careful in future.
