itunes/ipod shuffle problem

when i plug in my ipod shufle itunes doesnt seem to recognise it. I am given an on-screen prompt saying " an ipod has been detected but it could not be identified properly . Please disconnect & reconnect the ipod & try again. If the problem persists uninstall itunes then install itunes again ". Is it worth doing this ? Trying scan and fix gives me an error message saying "the disk check couldnt be perfomed because windows cannot access the disk." & pressing the restore button only seems to freeze itunes
