If I am wealthy, and I have worked hard to get that way, am I obligated to reach down and pick up the average people and support the poor who dont want a better life?

I don't like the latter, but I don't have a choice, and I take consolation in the fact that when I'm unable to pay my own taxes, then I'll be able to benefit from those who do - just as others have benefitted from what I've paid in the past.
Of course, if you don't want your pension, your subsidised health care, emergency services and all the rest ...

The only people who should feel obliged to help the less fortunate are the ones who are born into wealth without having to lift a finger.
Those who get richer through working usually appreciate the struggle of those less fortunate and often contribute to Society in same way without being told to do so.
