do i need a passport to travel to dublin, ireland, i will be travelling from britain, i have been told that a birth certificate will be sufficient, but i do not believe this to be true, as other people have told me that i will need photographic i.d.

From Ryanair's web site:

All passengers must present valid photo identification at check-in for all flights. The only acceptable forms of photo-ID on Ryanair flights are:
A valid passport
A valid Government issued National Identity Card issued by a European Economic Area (EEA) country. Only the following countries from the EEA issue National Identity Cards which are acceptable for carriage: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland.
A valid European Economic Area (EEA) driving licence with photo presented by an EEA national IS ONLY ACCEPTABLE for travel on domestic flights i.e. internal flights within the UK, internal flights within Italy and UK-Republic of Ireland-UK routes.

I flew to Dublin from England a few years ago without a passport, but that was in the days before 9/11 and increased security.

If you have not got a passport then your driving license WITH a photograph should do.

The truth of the matter is that you dont need any ID. Firms like Ryan Air dont want you buying a ticket then for some reason if you cant make it - giving it to someone else for Free. They claim it is for security reasons...it's thier policy...not one elses.... I love having fun at the gate with when I ask....is it a legal requirement?

Are you flying? I went a few years ago and we drove and got the ferry and I didn't have a passport at the time

Sorry,... continued... if it's one of Ryanair's conditions then you will have to comply with it or they will be within their rights to refuse to check you in.

Do the people in the queue behind you enjoy it while you are "having fun" arguing with the check-in clerk?
