You can get them from Whittards or Ringtons (both have online stores, I would recommend Ringtons) and the reason for the fresher flavour is because they are bigger, less of the coffee that is eventually ground has been exposed to the air. On the opposite note, Tesco 'Original' beans are brilliant as a readily available and low cost option. I am quite into the flavour of coffee as I drink espresso. If you are adding milk though, these recommendations are best for the flavour coming through the milk well, as well.
I buy in bulk from 'nextdaycoffee' - they are much cheaper than supermarkets and have an excellent range of beans. Although a 1kg pack seems a lot, you can keep an opened pack of beans in the freezer for quite a while with no problems - just sellotape it closed with as little air as possible in the bag.

If you ever have the chance (once a year for about 2 weeks, here in the U.S.) watch for Jamaican Blue Mountain... but check with your bank for a loan first... the Blue Mountain Estate is about $35 (US) a pound here...
