This is attempt number 4 of posting this message.

When I type in a web address, the page is not found at first attempt. If I click refresh, it will find the page I am looking for. This is beginning to drive me crazy, and I have no idea why this is happening. My Laptop is only 6 months old, running XP and IE,with 512 MB RAM.I also have a 3MB broadband connection. If I use Firefox I do not get this problem, but Firefox does not work with some of the sites I regularly use.

cheers for your help Matt.I just ran Spybot and Adaware, and although the problem has not completely gone away, it is happening much much less.
It could be that there's some sort of problem accessing your ISP's domain name server. You need to find out the (numerical) addresses for the primary and secondary DNS servers. (These should be available from your ISP's website). You then need to go to the TCP/IP settings in your internet connection software and switch from 'server assigned name server addresses' to 'specify name server addresses', entering the correct numerical addresses. I know where to find the TCP/IP settings for dial-up networking but not for broadband but, as long as you can locate the software which connects you to your ISP you shouldn't have much of a problem finding where to go.

what anti-virus do you use?

Thanks everyone for your help.fo3nix,I use Norton Antivirus, but even if I disable it, I still have the same problems. For the past 2 hours I have been unsuccessfully trying to get online, but I discovered that if I closed down BitLord (I was downloading at the time) I could get online ok.I have been using torrent software for about 18 months now and have never had any problems access the internet whilst running BitLord, and my current laptop is of a much higer spec than my previous one.I tried to restore my system to a previous date, but none of them worked.I am getting really fed up sitting here night after night trying to work out what I have done wrong.I am on the verge of chucking my laptop out of the window.
