itunes wont play

When i select my tunes on itunes or itunes radio the details come up in the top box and the blue speaker appears to the left of the selection but when i press the play button, although it alternates between play and pause, nothing happens - please help.

try uninstalling, downloading the latest version, then re-installing. may solve it easily.

Is it just iTunes? I mean, are you able to get other programs to play sound?
