There's two different types of Messenger, MSN Messenger which is the flashy one that you've just installed/updated, and there's plain ordinary Messenger. I don't believe it's a good idea to get rid of messenger as it's fairly well interwoven with Windows. You can, however, prevent it from starting.
If you click Start... Run... and type "msconfig" without the quotes and click OK, a box will appear. On the Startup tab, there should be 2 entries, one for MSN Messenger and one for Messenger. Uncheck the box beside Messenger, then click OK until the box goes. After you reboot, you'll only have the new MSN Messenger running.
I think messenger will run again if you start up Outlook Express, but I'll have to check on that. Good luck, it's easy!

Hi Ralph...easy you say?...there are no entries at all either for Windows Messenger (which is the one that comes with Windows) or for the MSN Messenger which is the new one..........not so easy to move it ..you can disable it using the link I gave above or even by renaming the Messenger folder in C/Windows folder to Messengerdisable or something like that....but there is always something that bugs you........pop up messages saying you are "signed out of another computer" and irritating things like that.......it really is deeply integrated into Windows.......I have it just learned to accept it....commoner.
Sorry commoner, should have been easy, I was on Windows 2000 at work when I wrote that, so I couldn't check 'cos it doesn't have msconfig. The entries on the startup tab are MSMSGS and MsnMsgr. The first one is the one you want to disable while the second one is the good one.
One small free program I recommend is StartupCPL from http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml which adds an entry to the Control Panel. When you start it up, it shows you everything that starts up when your computer boots and lets you disable it. Both the Messenger's are in there on the HKCU/Run tab.

Kerplunk .....It does not appear on that Windows component list by default......THAT is the problem...it is hidden. It can be "unhidden" by carefully following the instructions in the link I gave............by removing the relevent hide text in the sysoc.inf file.........it then magically appears in the Windows Components section of Add/Remove Programs.and you can then uncheck it.
This doesn't actually remove it....merely stops it working.
