...fished for a compliment and been taken aback by what you got?
A couple of threads on here brought this to mind.
Once, during many years of illness OH was given six days respite from hospital and home treatment. JOY! We decided to set of for France to join friends in their rented cottage.
I did the driving. A long motorway journey. Confusion and hold ups at the tunnel. Desperate hunts for loos (OHs illness not my bladder). Detours and thunderstorms in France. Torrential rain and such a long search for the village so remote I renamed it Brigadoon. But we made it!
Exhausted I turned to OH and said "What a journey. What d`you think?"
Well driven would have done.
He looked at me and said........."I think you should pluck that hair on your chin before it gets any longer".

I asked if they wanted the truth or did they want to hear some thing nice. They said the truth, I told them and for the next three weeks I could only get served by the steward. It taught me to think twice before answering a lady when they're fishing for compliments
