Web cam advice please

I'm interested in having a web cam but don't know the first thing about them. Presumably they are portable and battery operated. What would I need to be able to load a moving pic onto my PC or a web site, or perhaps attach to an email? Not knowing where to start, a few pointers would be much appreciated.

Do you mean a web cam, that is integrated in to your pc is sits on top of it to enable video chats online, or a camcorder that you take out and about to make films?

Good point hc thank you. Just shows how little I know on the subject. I should have said camcorder - something I can take out and about to record local events and activities.

Well, camcorders range from the cheap and cheerful that are very easy to use at every stage, from shooting the video to uploading it to the computer.

These start at around £80 and have very little options - they are point and shoot cameras that can film for perhaps an hour or two.
This one shoots in HD for 2 hours for £85.

I suggest you get to the newsagent and buy a specialist magazine, go to a high street store and get the feel of a few, decide what you want the camcorder for, then ask again

Many thanks hc, you are being very helpful. Just one more thing - how do I get filmed material from a camcorder onto the PC? Do they have an adapter or special software?

I have a Microsoft Cinema HD (widescreen) Thoroughly recommend it ..
You don't have to spend that money .. I paid £30 for mine (eBay)
Logitech HD is good too.

You use software to capture or import into video apps.

In the first link I posted the camcorder has a built in USB connection that flips out, so no cables or anything needed to upload your video to pc.

Otherwise you would either use a cable or, if your pc has a memory card reader, simply take the card out of the camcorder and put it in the reader

I really am most grateful for the interest and replies to my 'lack of knowledge'. A camcorder with a built in USB sounds like a good solution. My next shopping expedition will be most interesting now I know what I'm looking for!
