My 54 Yaris has just passed its MOT but the new certificate now prints 'Advisory Information' which states that the two front and two rear break pipes are slightly corroded. They(KwikFit) will do the repair for £250. One of the mechanics said they would probably last till the next service. Do yiu think I should get them done (I cant afford at the moment) or will there be some sign to warn me when they are getting bad? (My wife wouldn't drive if she knew)

Agree with you TWR but looking on this forum it is obvious that a large portion of drivers don't know much about driving or how a car works.
I did get one over on Kwikfit though !
Some time ago I got a new exhaust back box from kwik fit with a 2 year guarantee, It cost me £35, the exhaust got a small hole in it after 18 months, you could hardly hear it so I went back to Kwk fit and just asked them if I needed a new exhaust, of course they said yes. Asked them if they had one and could fit it then I showed them the gaurantee, They went in a huddle and got the manager because a new back box had gone up to £70.
They had to do it though!

As others have said keep away from Kwik Fit. They spend more time checking your vehicle for additional work as soon as you cross their door than they do in doing the work you want done. Most of what the advise is unnecessary. At my recent service/MOT, by a one man independent garage, I too was advised the brake pipes were a little corroded but he cleaned them off and greased them saying they would last a few years yet.
I would say £250 was very expensive for replacement if they did need changing..

Toureman. I know plenty about driving, and I used to do most of my servicing myself in the fifties (Morris Minor). I just wondered how long my brake pipes would be safe after the first signs of corrosion in modern cars and if it is necessary whether £250 is a fair price if it comes to the push.
Incidentally I was told that the inside of my rear tyres(where I can't see) is perished (old tyres) although the tread is still almost perfect, and that they should be replaced. They told me this about my front tyres last year and I replaced them.

I was advised not to replace them there and then a the mechanic thought they had about 6000 miles in them and I generally did 10,0000 per year.
I could see that was about right myself.
The garage said they did not sell tyres so I had to take the car elsewhere anyway.

Tooj, I was wrong to assume that you new the site ( I always put my foot in it) your brake pipes should not have corroded at the length of time Tooj, these people are the biggest rip off merchants going, Incidentally this company K.F. are tyre fitters let them stick to replacing tyres & leave the mechanics to people that has trained to do the job.

However many years ago my brother did just that - and his wheel fell off on the way home! It actually overtook him.

Don't take any notice, I got an advisory 2 years ago saying my brake pipes were rusted and needed replacement at the next MOT. The next year and the year after that it passed with no problem and no mention of the rust. The brake pipes are stainless steel anyway so I knew it was rubbish, they just do it to get you to pay for unnessesary repairs. The Yaris has stainless steel brake pipes as well as do 99% of modern cars .
