Blood Test

I am due to take a blood test for Cholestorol, have been told you have to fast for a certain period of time, can anyone tell me how long you fast for and what if anything can you drink anything during the fasting time?

I have had regular diabetic blood tests - including cholesterol - for 10 years or so.

At the first GPs surgery I had to fast 8 hours but my current GP likes 14 hours!!!

Water is allowed but in strict moderation (and to take tablets)
