If the swelling is confined to the toes, then there is little else that one can do but to " sit it out" so to speak.
But if the swelling is over the foot part, then I should go to A&E tomorrow as you may well have a fracture of your metatarsal.
If however it is just the toes.......then no big deal.

If there's general pain around the area, with no clearly identifiable centre to it, it's probably only soft tissue damage. If If there's one specific point that you'd rather not touch, with pain radiating out from it, it's probably a fracture.
Even if it is broken though, there may not be much that can be done about it (other than waiting for it to heal naturally).

Thank you all, yes there is a specific spot which is very painful, it's the 2nd joint of 2nd toe, and the top of the foot swells up and goes down after I've been wearing loose boots. I just need to be able to walk properly for next week! Even the bedclothes hurt it.
Obviously Mr N was sworn at even though he was two rooms away but it made me feel better!

i've had the black and blue toes through not wearing shoes on 3 occasions. Even though i never actually broke a toe,the black and blue bruising and pain, took weeks to heal, and you just have to find the footwear that hurts the least. For me also, the worst pain seemed to be on my toe's middle knuckle. It did fade in time.
Yes the doctor thinks the bone at the base of the 2nd and 3rd toes is broken, just been for an urgent x-ray, had a diclophenato(!) injection in my bum and now taking painkillers. Can't wear flipflops as the toes are too swollen for the thong bit, slopping about in uggs but it is rather warm. I must learn to a) close cupboard doors....b) put the lights on....and c) WEAR SHOES!!!
Thanks for all the concern! I am a wimp!
