Shop Cleaning

Does an agreement you sign when joining a company hold water: in the respect that you are expected to clean the shop on a rota system? Does the insurance cover you for shop cleaning during opening hours?

I know for instance that if uniform is not provided, you can keep to the company guidlines but they cannot prevent you from wearing the clothes you want to as long as you are decently dressed and in the colours that the company expected, and properly dressed to serve in a shop.Some of you must have served on industrial tribunals out there and would know the legal side of it.

We have a MD who is a bit of a Napoleon, I would really like to know where I stand.

I can only go on the place I work, but if by 'agreement', you mean contract, then its watertight, however, if its a verbal agreement, then its on the trust, honesty and reliability of your workmates, and any of them can at any time pull out of it. Sorry I can't be more help.

mdoo98: Thanks for yr answer. Apparently using a vacuum cleaner during shop opening hours is going to be banned for safety reasons. Is that true and how soon will the law come in?Does any one know the EU ruling on this?

The cleaning is only shop floor cleaning, but I realized that "cleaning" or "Housekeeping" in the shop means merchandising that is in my case stacking things which I recognised as my duty. But I think that doing the floor during opening hours is hazardous therefore I really objected to being rostered for using a hoover. That is the bone of contention. Thanks all the same for taking the trouble to answer.
