Inhalers

Mr P has been diagnosed with Adult Asthma. He had a rotten cold just before Christmas and the Doc isn't sure if it's just a left over from that and it'll go away, or if he's got it for life.

Anyway, he's on two inhalers - Salbutamol and Clenil Modulite. The only problem he's having is that they seem to be affecting his sense of taste. Most foods now just taste "wrong" to him and in he just can't eat quite a few everyday things.

I was wondering if there was a mouthwash that would help?

Any suggestions?

Well, his loss of sense of taste is almost certainly secondary to a loss of sense of smell and i have never known this to be a side effect of inhalers.......in my experience.

How was the asthma diagnosed and by whom?

I cannot see that mouth washes would be helpful in any way.

re inhalers, its advised to rinse mouth out with water especially when using for the first time.

Hi Sqad, his GP referred him to a chest specialist who diagnosed the asthma.

His taste went wonky just after he started using the inhalers but he's still got his sense of smell. I thought that maybe the inhalers were leaving a coating on his tastebuds and that's why food tasted strange to him.

I just wondered if using a mouthwash would rinse any residue off his tongue?

With the preventer inhaler (not the salbutamol) he should be drinking after use or swilling his mouth with normal mouthwash, they contain steroids and can cause the problem your hubby is having. It will settle down once he has been using it for a while.

Tell him to brush his teeth and tongue after using his inhalers, using plain water. The steroid ones can cause oral thrush which is horrid!
