internet speed

We have been having problems with our internet speed (it kep timing out and my son can't play on X Box live) and today the BT man came, fixed a new box and said that the internet speed was 3.7. My husband ran a speed test and it is only at 1. Is this because our internet equipment (the thing that you plug into the phone line) is rubbish or is it something else. Thanks. (PS - if you are kind enough to answer could you please keep it really simple as I have no idea how all this works, only that ours is not working as it should.)

3.7 or 1 Mbytes is extremely slow so I'm not surprised things don't work. I can only suggest you switch to Virgin Media and get 20 Mb straight away.
