Does anyone know any websites that tell you the distance between different towns or show good clear maps of regions of Britain? Thanks in advance

In addition to the links provided by Gary, you might like to try Mapquest or the AA's routefinding facility:

ViaMichelin is also quite good for both maps and directions (with distances):

This might not be what you are after but it's brill, you can find and view your house, go down the Grand Canyon, check out the pool on your hotel in Spain, just download the free software and you will be amazed at the detail, it shows roads, towns and, well just have a look.
It's like owning your own satellite, let me know what you think ( anybody )
Thanks for all the links everyone. And yes, jrtv, Google Earth is really good...could see the road markings on my street and everything!! (though the satellite picture is quite old as there is now a building across from my house which isn't shown on the picture). Never-the-less it is a very clever and useful program. Thanks :-)
