Would it be a good idea to book a holiday here in September given the unrest at the moment or does this just affect the larger cities ?

If you want a nice beach I wouldn't bother with Sharm. There are beaches but they aren't up to much and are very sharp and rocky due to the coral. In fact it can be quite uncomfortable walking out in the sea, hence why the walkways into the sea. These can be pretty long so if you just want to dip in the sea its a bit of a hassle. September is not that late so you'll get good weather and better beaches in Europe.
