Can anyone remind me, I know the families were taken to new areas, I think with new identities, after it happened, does anyone know if this is still the case and whether Thompson and Venables are able to have any contact with their families? Just something I was wondering when this news story came out.

I wonder what the cost has been generally of all the new identities, and repeated ones in the case of Venables, of all parties and whether it is justified. Especially, if, as alleged with Venables, he confessed to his identity and returned to Merseyside from where he was banned.

It reminds me of the case of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman too, didn't the girlfriend get released with a new identity too.

I wonder how much we are paying to keep these people safe and whether it is justified. I'm interests in the thoughts of others.

Eve, yes, almost certainly it was the media who started with Jamie/Maddie.

I suspect Venables has become institutionalised, going on the trouble he's had before, and will end up back inside. Thompson may have fitted back into society. If so I wish him well.

I can see why they do it but it's very disrespectful to the family, especially when it's all over the media.

I wonder about their company whilst incarcerated, maybe not at a juvenile level but at an adult level, maybe with people who committed similar offences, I can't help wonder of the psychological impact on that of essentially a child locked up from such an early age. I have no idea of their prison circumstances though.

i would never wish thompson "well" jno" ! I would only hope that he has no further victims. Two boys carried out that heinous act and john venables has not proven himself to be the "brains" in any way since his release. One boy led,and one boy followed in that murder!
