Hi,my sister has just come back from Australia she is in her mid 50s,travelled all the way round, met plenty of very friendly people, she stayed in Hostels having joined the YHA before going, she never felt frightened at all she said there are lots of single people over there, so go for it have a great time we are only here once, there are loads of internet cafes and you can pick up a cheap mobile phone or sim card out there.

GOOD LUCK

Thanks. My cousin (who wants to travel there) is a little younger so a bit wary about safety issues, however i've found a couple of good webpages where you can find fellow lone travellers to go with.

Daughters of two friends of mine have spent time there. One was 18 and the other 19. The 19 year old spent one year travelling and working. Neither had any problems and both are planning to go back. The 18 year old spent two months on holiday staying at youth hostels and motels.

I have been twice because my son lives there and as far as I can tell it is alot safer there than over here.
