Password at start-up on XP

How do I get passed the 'password' stage when starting a computer.

I am giving my old laptop to my mate, but the password is not recognised at the start-up stage.

I have always used the password in question, so it is a mystery why it is no longer recognised - maybe it's because it hasn't been turned on for a few weeks?

All help appreciated...
