Plenty of people ask 'pointless', 'vacuous' questions on AB, though not in their opinion, and I can't see anything wrong in that.

Watch the clip in the link above wrayperson, the contestant answers "Rose" and Chris asks him is that is his final answer. The contestant says yes, but then very quickly says "no", it is too much of a gamble. So then Chris asks him for his "final, final, final answer?", the contestant doesn't want to take the risk and says he will take the money he already has.
I think cloverjo that he did say the words "final answer" & anyone who watches this show knows as soon as contestants say that,it is it. .. as far as weecalfs thoughts on the programme .. these people can win lots of money for goodness sake, how is that exploiting them? anyway I think that is enough for now.. thanks to all who gave serious answers & for those who just like to put stupid posts on..well!!
It's a difficult one to call, technically IMO you are quite correct but the guy rescinded it BEFORE the answer was lit up, so Chris let him rethink it (and rethink himself out of the prize). It would have been fascinating if the guy had later taken the same stance as you, and perhaps tried to legally grab the larger sum (but I expect the appearance contract small print would thwart him).
Allegedly, Chris doesn't see the correct answer on his screen until after the final answer is lit up, so presumably he didn't necessarily realise the guy had got it right.

I do know the rules of the game, I used to watch it regularly - but it the contestant said "no, I'll take the money" - even though he had mooted the right answer before he said that - the game rules are correct, he didn't want to put in forward as his final answer. CT can't jump in and say "yep, that's correct, is that your final?".
Chris Tarrant does stuff like this all the time. He frequently questions a contestant's final answer and says not "............." and then goes on to mention the other answers, or says something like 'are you sure' when they give the final answer or makes stupid comments like 'but you have no idea' when a contestant accepts what the audience says!! Quite frankly he gets on my wick and should just accept what the contestant says in the first place!
