A dog could get the bony parts (including parts from the head) stuck in his throat. While I'd happily give whole sardines to my cats (because they chew everything well before trying to swallow it), I'd be worried about giving them to a dog.
My dog loves tinned sardines { the ones in spring water}. Even other fish dogs will gladly eat the heads.

Too many bones, ease the side fillets off for dog. Me I'd be eating them myself!
Take the side fillets off, dust with seasoned flour and fry briefly in butter.oil mixture. Yummy.
Giving them to the dog!!!!I love fresh sardines ..would have ate them.. have not had them since living in Spain, only seen tinned one here,,whereabouts do you live
Wow, kate, you are missing out! Fresh sardines, yum....

Sardine fillets can be grilled or sautéed (hot pan) five minutes maz....a nice salsa verde or lemon juice, garlic and a little olive oil and fresh seasoning over them, served with focaccia bread perhaps or ciabatta.... great for a bbq as well.
kloofnek - you can get them down here.....

ever seen this one, a Mousehole Christmas tradition

Horseshoes...my cats do that but if I put them on a plate and pretend to be eating them then they'd scoff the lot.
