Desktop icons

I notice that I have 2 desktop icons (type of cog wheel on sheet of paper) that have appeared on my desktop when I click on them notepad windows open. Is it safe to just delete these? (Windows Vista)

I have some vinyl foil which I want to apply to an end panel on a kitchen cupboard. I have seen this being applied using heat from a hair dryer, but can anyone advise exactly how much heat is required...
