Need help with Ripper game?

I bought this RPG for my PC called "Ripper". I have attempted to play it many times, but can't get past the first puzzle .....DDddeerrr!!! Please help......Has anyone out there played it?

How do I go about Modifying Autoexec.bat and config.sys on my computer? Some programs of mine stall like 'The Sims' and 'Deus Ex' so I need 2 free up lots of memory I guess by modifying these 2 files?

I am going to New York for a few days. If I buy CD ROMs and DVDs over there, will they work in my PC when I come back to England, or do they use an incompatible system, as is the case for videotapes.
