Those organised village displays, local pub bonfire parties etc are impossible for many these days due to the horrendous insurance costs.

It's harder with cats but all dog owners should make sure their pets are desensitised to sudden, loud noises; unexpected occurrences such as flashes; crowds.....

It can be done.

Done, Jules. We don't have pets at the moment but have had in the past, and know how terrified they can get. In reply to Old Geezer, he obviously lives in a more peaceful part of the country than we do. I have nothing against other people's religions and way of life in general, but we have people celebrating Diwali for a whole month round here, with explosions most nights. I think that the council has at last cracked down on the lateness of these, which sometimes used to go on till 2 am. I understand it is a Festival of Light, but often seems to be a festival of noise! I agree that large commercial-type fireworks should not be on sale generally, and I would like to see firework parties limited to Guy Fawkes night and the nearest weekend. By the way, are there such things as quiet fireworks?

Perhaps I should have re worded the question. Personally I feel the sale of fireworks to the general public should be banned, and they are solely used in organised displays, and only on November 5th. We have had them now for four nights from 5pm until midnight. Apart from my puppy who has spent the last three hours barking at them, the others are ok 'in the house', but
it is impossible to let the dogs out in their own garden after dark due to the bangs. The problem is that they get louder each year. For anyone that thinks they are fun, take a visit to your local A & E department. For those that think all dogs can be desensitised to them, I disagree and it is heartbreaking to see the number of dogs on Dogs Lost who have bolted due to the sudden noise of a firework, many are still on the loose and they must be absolutely petrified.

No worries Sherrardk. I dont know what dog owners and dog mess has to do with it though! I see more broken glass and rubbish on the ground than I do dog poo. As a matter of interest, I often wonder what the people who are happy for fireworks to be let off in their neighbours garden would say if one hit their car, or set their shed on fire.

Where's the option to vote no?... if there isn't one surely it's undemocratic to give people the chance to say yes only.

Oh I suspect one can get a lot more democratic than another ignored petition.

I don't see how folk can equate an organised display with your own family show. They're so different, the former is not a patch on the latter and certainly no substitute.

I am in favour of a ban, not only from the pets point of view, but also I hate the louts that hang around with them for nuisance sake and letting them of in front of pedestrians on the pavement.
