Ok...you come over to me-and try to take out a dog who becomes very fearful of both noise and the dark this time of the year. Maybe *you'd * like to forcibly drag her out-maybe she will go out-but all she will do is wee-and then it's back in again.
Gee..now I know-I guess I should be using force....that'll sort her.
I didn't know she would be like this-and I doubt the rescue agency I used would have known either. But-I accept that this is the way she will always be...it's up to me to make her as comfortable as possible so she won't suffer too much.

Yes it is Pastafreak. It's up to you. Fireworks are a fact of life and your dog needs to get used to them.
I'd rather not come over to you and try to train your dogs. It's one of the reasons I don't have dogs. I work all the time so it wouldn't be fair on them.
The point of this thread is whether or not fireworks should be banned because people choose to have pets. My answer to that is no.

ok so how would i go about familiarising my 2 cats with the noise of fireworks? I might try it ready for new years eve, around here it goes crazy then. my lizzie is incredibly nervous of anything noisy and does not hide, she freezes and shakes. should i try making alot of sudden noises on a regular basis?
Mine isn't Woofgang, which is why I will ignore your personal attack on me.
Your dogs are your responsibility. That's a simple fact. Fireworks have been going off in Britain on November 5th for lots of years. Also a simple fact.
If you expect a whole nation to modify its behaviour because of your dog then I'm sorry, it's not me who is the idiot.

i'd prefer to pressure for a ban on fireworks than to be cruel to my cat though, if i were honest. never enjoyed fireworks and never took my kids to a bonfire. i don't understand why alot of loud bangs and wooshing noises are ok on a quiet evening when i'm relaxing watching TV, it is disturbing and annoying and i don't appreciate nor enjoy it, why are my rights any different to the people setting fires and firing rockets into the air?
@Dotty.
It's not cruel for your cat to be scared for an hour or two. \saying it is is exaggerating the point.
Slate me all you like but the simple fact is, fireworks have been around for hundreds of years and yes, a few loud bangs can frighten our pets, but not enough to call for a global ban.
It's been interesting to see the reaction to my views. Interesting, but not pleasant.

I've also just revisited the regulations and the EU has specifically changed the maximum sound levels of fireworks since 2002 to address the issues of the distress caused to pets and livestock, and old people awww, so my point is, if the governing authority is trying to help with the issue then it is considered a valid problem and pet owners should not have to embark on cruel to be kind training programmes for their pets, they should be encouraged by animal welfare groups to lobby the right authroities to ban fireworks that make a noise, i am sure a deaf person can enjoy a fore work display and not feel deprived, why do they need to make a noise at all? if the manufacturers can make them quieter to meet the current ;legislation i am darn sure they can make then silent.
mojo i won;t subject my cat to ill treatment for a second or two never mind an hour or two, she'd never glare at me in the eye again, i shall write to my MP (the Muppet) and suggest he starts sorting out the noise issue immediatley and works towards silent fireworks, then the intended enjoyment, i.e. the light displays , can be the focus , not how loud they are.
I agree in part Dotty and fireworks are much quieter and less frequent than they were a few years ago.
Personally, I don't think they need to be completely silent, though I don't like the really loud ones. Thankfully they are few and far between these days and you can report anyone who uses them.
I have pets. I've had them all my life and they don't like fireworks much but to call it cruelty and to call for a ban on all fireworks because of it is a step too far in my opinion.
