Any ideas? We heard what we thought was a dog barking (say a medium sized dog) and then saw a large bird flying across the field. It was this bird definitely making this noise. Trouble is it was only in view for a few seconds.

As I say the sound was a single "bark", almost a woof.

Any ideas?

Corncrake?
Ignore that last comment - corncrake not large enough and very elusive.

No. Def not either of them!
Could it be a crow?
I have heard a similar noise from one in the fields around here.
Also think most likely answer is a crow or rook. I hear them making that sound round me.
